OBJECTIVE: To investigate the antagonizing effect of selenium (Se) to the production of oxide free radical and the impact to some trace elements after Se taken. METHODS: To determinate of MDA contents by TBA, GSH-Px activity by DTNB, Se content by graphite furnace assay, Mg 2+ content and Ca 2+ content by flame assay, respectively. RESULTS: Rat cardiac muscle GSH-Px activity, Se 2+ and Mg 2+ were increased after Se taken, while MDA and Ca 2+ contents were decreased. GSH-Px and Ca 2+ were mainly influenced in organic Se group, while Mg 2+ was mainly influenced in inorganic Se group, especially during reperfusion period. CONCLUSION: The increase of GSH-Px activity and Ca 2+ content and the decrease of Ca 2+ through Se taken may be involved in the mechanism of Se antagonizing to free radical damage in cardiac muscle in rats.
