Objective To evaluate the significance of thickness of ganglion cell complex (GCC) and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) with optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the patients with pituitary tumor. Design Retrospective case series. Participants 122 eyes of 61 pituitary tumor patients diagnosed in Department of Neurosurgery of Beijing TianTan Hospital. Methods All the patients received the visual field (VF) test with Octopus 900 perimeter and the mean thickness of GCC in macular area and pRNFL were measured with RTVue OCT. The correlation between two paired parameters (namely, mean thickness of GCC and pRNFL, in comparison with MS and MD) was compared and analyzed. Main Outcome Measures GCC mean thickness in macular area, pRNFL mean thickness, Pearson correlation coefficient. Results The mean thickness of abnormal GCC in pituitary tumor was 77.2 p.m (left eye, n=25) and 80.3 p.m (right eye, n=19), and pRNFL 86.iu,m (left eye, n=24) and 89.1 p.m (right eye, n=21). The coefficient correlation of the mean thickness of pRNFL and GCC in comparison with MD of visual field were 0.475-0.596 (P=0.000)and 0.437-0.500 (P=0.000), respectively. Conclusion The thickness of pRNFL and GCC measured with RTVue OCT may reflect visual functional lesion of pituitary tumor objectively and quantitatively.
