Aim: The objectives are to review the results of researches on treatment of cerebrovascular diseases with Chinese medicine; To give serious consideration to the problems existed; To seek for the way for dealing with it; to maintain and promote the traditional advantages of Chinese medicine. Methods: To refer to the relevant assays in Wanfang data, Medline and Journal of Biological Medicine of Chinese version, and focus on the literatures on medical treatment of cerebrovascular diseases published from 2001 to 2004 and summarize the relevant information collected from the research papers. Results: There are some questions existed mainly on the treatment aspect, such as unclear division at acute stage, adopt old views on etiology, complicated pathogenesis, treating principles focusing on disease rather than syndromes, contraindication of rare animal herbs, fewer types of emergent medical preparations and unsatisfactory therapeutic effects, as well as over-emphasizing characters in clinic and researches, lack of standardization, etc. Conclusion: To determine the time division at the acute stage of cerebrovascular diseases to improve therapeutic effects of Chinese medicine based on differentiation of syndromes; to enhance the researches of cerebrovascular diseases on etiology and pathogenesis so as to display the modern characters of Chinese medicine researches; concerning to symptoms in Chinese medicine, to develop qualitative description to quantitative calculation and standardize simplified differentiation of syndromes; to bring the advantages of coordination of acupuncture and medication, combination of the interior and exterior and give both physical and mental consideration into play in three-dimensional therapy of Chinese medicine, and carry on the researches on the principle of activating blood circulation and resolving stasis at the early stage which has received co-recognition according to evidence-based medicine; to search the substitute for rare animal herbs, strengthen the therapeutic effects of emergent medical preparation and increase the categories of clinical practical emergent medical preparations. It is the goal in the future to fully use the satisfactory mass basis of Chinese medicine, carry forward the traditional advantages of prevention and treatment of cerebrovascular diseases, use the achievement of modern research for reference and make constant innovation in Chinese medicine.
