Aim: To evaluate the effect of stroke unit (SU) on clinical neurological defect and activities of daily living in stroke patient by means of cost-effective analysis. Methods: Totally 285 patients with acute infarction stroke, who were admitted in our department during December 2001 to January 2003, were randomized into SU and general ward(GW) to receive treatments. Observational measures included the length of the hospital stay, Barthel Index(BI), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale(NIHSS), Oxford Handicap Scale (OHS) and hospitalization cost. SPSS 10.0 software was conducted for assessing the cost-effect of SU. Results: Compared with GW, the mean cost on SU was ¥ 509.91 less for NIHSS 1 point lower; ¥ 720.88 less for OHS 1 grade lower; and ¥ 42.6 less for BI 5 points higher. Conclusion: In comparison with GW, there is less cost on SU for 1 functional unit higher, which means more efficiency.
