Aim. To compare the effects of peripheral neural block and peripheral never block combined with polarized infrared ray irradiating the stellate ganglion of ill side for treatment of trifacial neuralgia and investigate the effect characters of different therapy. Methods. Thirty-eight patients with trigeminal neuralgia were randomly divided into two groups: group A, including 9males and 11females with an average age of (54±14) years; group B, including 8males and 10females with an average age of (58±8) years. Group A and B were treated with treated with 5ml lidocaine of 20g/L, 0.5mg VitB12 plus saline diluted to 10ml once one or two days for 5 times as a course and only group B was irradiated by polarized infrared ray for 10 minutes, whose duty was 60% ∼ 80% with 2:3 layout pattern. The visual analogue scales (VASs) was conducted to evaluated the painful degree at 10 ∼ 15 minutes before and after each treatment in all patients. Results. The scores of VAS were 7.6±2.2 in group A and 7.6± 1.1 in group B before treatment, with no significant difference between the two groups (t= 0.01, P > 0.05). In both groups, the scores of VAS were decreased significantly after each treatment (t = 15. 48 ∼ 43.71, P < 0.001), and the pain relived gradually till disappeared. After a course, the scores of VAS reduced to 2.6 ± 2.4 and 3.5 ± 1.8 in the two groups respectively and the remission rates of pain were up to 64% and 51% in the two groups respectively. The changes of VAS scores showed no significant difference between the two groups before and after each treatment. Conclusion. Regional peripheral nerve block is effective for trigeminal neuralgia. However, Peripheral nerve block combined with polarized infrared ray has no significant advantage in the early effect for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia.
