Detection of vulnerable plaques on the early stage is of vital importance in the prevention of its dreadful complications such as acute coronary syndrome. However, inflammatory cells and proteins play a key role in the progression of vulnerable plaques. So clinically, there is an urgent need for a kind of multi-modality imaging strategy which can both reflect the characteristics of plaque morphology and plaque inflammation degree. PET/CT and PET/MRI are promising strategies in this regard, especially combined with CT or MRI, which provide not only the morphological characteristics, but also the inflammatory state of the atheromatous plaques. The progresses of CT, MRI, PET/CT, PET/MRI for detection of vulnerable plaques were reviewed in this article.
